Mount Elgon National Park

As the name implies, Mount Elgon National Park is named after it’s most distinctive feature – Mount Elgon. Tourists visiting this park don’t come specifically for the game to be seen here, but to climb the mountain and descend into the 40km2 caldera. The mountain straddles the border between Uganda and Kenya, forming a large, trans-boundary conservation area between the two countries, harbouring elephant, buffalo, antelope and over 300 species of birds. At 4.321m above sealevel, Mount Elgon’s Wagagai Peak forms East Africa’s 4th highest peak.

Local tribes inhabiting this area are the Bagisu, Sabiny and the marginalized Ndorobo.
